Taylor Custom GT8 Baritone 8-String Cocobolo / Adirondack with Taylor Hard Case
In 2017 Mike travelled to the Taylor Guitars factory in El Cajon, California, where he hand selected tonewoods to be used in creating four custom Taylor guitars exclusive to Guitar Galleries.
This beautiful Custom GT8 Baritone 8-String features Taylor's Grand Symphony body shape. Compared with Taylor's most popular and versatile Grand Auditorium shape, the Grand Symphony has a bigger, rounder lower bout and a slightly wider waist, producing more tonal output, a meaty midrange, and strong treble shimmer. This body shape is perfect for Baritone guitars. This Custom GT8 features a mahogany neck with a 27" scale, a width of 1-3/4", and a smooth satin finish. The Barione is tuned B to B, and overall this creates a husky lower-register voicing with a touch of octave sparkle on the two middle strings.
This custom guitar features stunning Cocobolo back and sides. Cocobolo is a dense, stiff tropical hardwood from Mexico, and it produces a fairly bright overall tone emphasised by sparkling treble notes. Sonically it resembles Hawaiian koa but resonates a little deeper on the low end. The tone is fast, responsive, and articulate.
This is paired with an Adirondack Spruce top. Adirondack spruce has a “springy” quality. Acoustically, it produces a robust output and more dynamic range than Sitka, which allows it to be driven aggressively for greater volume without distortion. The midrange tones also tend to have a richer, sweeter quality.
This guitar also features a gorgeous Tropical Vine inlay on the fretboard, made from Abalone and Mother of Pearl, Abalone soundhole rosette, Adirondack spruce bracing with patented Taylor relief rout, ebony binding, Taylor Gold "Mini" tuners, and of course Taylor's innovative Expression System 2 pickup, a breakthrough behind-the-saddle system which accurately amplifies the true tone of each guitar, letting this custom guitar's unique tone shine through perfectly.
