Introduced at the 1980 NAMM show, The Strat was Fender's attempt to blend classic features with modern electronics and give the concept a much needed boost. Designer Gregg Wilson, with Dan Armstrong acting as consultant reintroduced the smaller pre-CBS headstock shape (not entirely accurate as they were using old worn tooling), pre-CBS truss rod and four bolt neck, combining them with a hotter bridge pickup (the X-1) and a new circuit arrangement. Married to this came the new 22 carat gold electroplated brass hardware (plated at a hundred microns like fine jewellery, dubbed the Brassmaster Series) and a choice of either Candy Apple Red or Lake Placid Blue finishes with matching headstock.
The guitar features the hotter X1 pickup in the bridge position & the bottom tone control is a 2-point rotary switch & the precursor to the S1 switching system.
The 5 way switch operates as a normal strat switch from 1 to 5, turning the rotary switch anti clockwise gives access to 4 more tones, but does not affect position1 on the bridge pickup, position 6 (2) = neck & bridge in parallel, position 7 (3) = neck & middle in series, position 8 (4) = neck & bridge in parallel with middle in series, position 9 (5) = middle & bridge in series.
The extra options make a big difference & some really nice beefier, creamier tones can be achieved, making this guitar really versatile.
The hardware is brass that is plated with 22-carat gold, which is 100 microns thick, like fine jewellery. This guitar is one of the early models that has chrome tuners, due to a delay in parts delivery of the gold-plated tuners.
The body is Swamp Ash & the neck is one piece maple with a walnut skunk stripe, it has a 7.25 inch radius & a D-shaped profile. The tuners are the Schaller Chrome sealed type, stamped with the Fender logo.
